African And Toureg Carterton Prospects
“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. African, which has good form to recommend him and a liking for heavy going, is selected to win the Carterton Racing Club Handicap of the Carterton Racing Club’s 1 .A.B. double todav.
Toureg, another mud-lark, is chosen in the second leg, the H. J. Brown Memorial Handicap.
African has two seconds as his immediate form, at Hastings, where he was soundly beaten by Triple Bel. and at Wanganui, where he was just beaten by Dowdex.
African’s last race was six and a half weeks ago. but he is reported to have held his form well.
Big Bill, which has been troubled by soreness, returned to form with an easy win at Levin at his last start. Meantime he has been worked on the beach. It was only in the last halffurlong that Sir Blue got the better of Athlone at Hastings on Monday and with the scratching of the former Athlone looks well placed. Laud worked exceptionally well at Otaki on Thursday and using this and his easy win in very heavy ground at Marton at his last start as a guide he appears to have a grand chance. Blue Defaulter ran his best race for some time when he finished third to Sir Blue and Athlone at Hastings. He was well away from the winner, but he looked as though the race would improve him.
11l Goch! Order Top Lad, which is thriving on his beach preparation, was said to be in good order by his trainer. M. N. Seal, at Otaki on Thursday. He is a front-runner and should be suited by the Tauherenikau track. Toureg looks to have the best chance in the H. J. Brown Memorial, the second leg of the double. No rider has been listed for him. His usual jockey, R. W. Taylor, will ride Gold Ruth. David Jeff, an impressive winner at Hastings last start, and winner of this race last
year, looks to have the next best chance.
Gold Ruth has not had much racing lately, but she showed with a good third over seven furlongs in the Trentham mud that she was close to her best. Carnmor finished solidly for fourth in a sprint at Trentham, but then ran two mediocre races over more ground. Back to sprinting, he might do better.
Lucky Rebel showed, with an encouraging fifth at Hastings. that he is not far from his best and it would not surprise if he raced well. The track was very heavy yesterday and it is unlikely that it will dry out to any extent. Selections:—
