FARMHANDS’ AWARD

‘Embarrassing Industry’ (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 20. The farm workers’ award was absolutely unrealistic and belittled the farmer in the eyes of the public, Mr J. B. Hudson told Auckland Federated Farmers today. Mr Hudson said the public would not recognise just how important farming was to New Zealand until the award was overhauled.

The award for a 21-year-old farm worker was £lO 5s 6d a week including holiday pay and week-end work, he said. He knew most farmers were paying more than the award, but it went to show just how unrealistic the award was.

The chairman, Mr A. R. Hughes, said the award was embarrassing to farmers.
