Sparks Road Residents’ Complaints To Council

A petition received from seven unnamed Sparks road residents, complaining about rates and services was reported by the financial committee to a meeting of the Halswell County Council. The council agreed to the committee’s recommendations that the petitioners be told: That the council, did not intend to pipe the Sparks road storm-water and that until the drain was piped, a footpath could not be formed: That the petitioners were not contributing to the council's water-supply scheme.

That the council paid £975 a year to the Metropolitan Fire Board, to which all ratepayers contributed, and that those properties in the board’s area (including Sparks road) were covered by the Christchurch Brigade; and

That the council rates were slightly more than 50 per cent of the total demand, the rest going to other local bodies.

Subdivision.—On the subdivision committee’s recommendation, it was agreed to retelephone reticulation for a quire underground power and Fletcher Construction Company subdivision at Halswell, and to delay the plan until comments were received from the Regional Planning Authority and Ministry of Works.

Nassella Tussock. The weeds supervisor (Mr F. E. Hoskin) reported that three mature nassella tussock plants had been found and grubbed in the Worsley’s road area.

Plumbing Work.—The council agreed to suspension of the Plumbers' and Gas-Fitters' Registration Act in the county area actually sewered by the Drainage Board. The effect is to stop “do it yourself” work.

Polling Places. It was agreed to have a new polling place at Oaklands School, in addition to the usual places at St. Mary’s Church hall, Halswell School and Tai Tapu School for the local body elections on October 9.

New Bridge.—The chairman (Cr. J. Y. Pethig) referred to newspaper reports that the City Council proposed to spend £lO,OOO next year on a new bridge at Worsley’s road, on the joint boundary of the city and Heathcote and Halswell counties. He said on this basis, Harwell's share would be £2500, and it was reasonable to expect that Heathcote also would provide £2500.
