TEST OF WILL

Significance Of Battle (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAIGON, August 20. The savage battle of Chu Lai—the most successful but costly American engagement of the Vietnamese war—has a very special, but limited significance, James Reston reported in the “New York Times” news service. It was a test of the American will to fight, and of the Viet Cong strategy of smashing the Americans before they could bring their strength to the battlefield, Reston said.

There will be no rejoicing in the United States when the casualties are announced, but it defeated the Viet Cong's bold adventure and wftl undoubtedly influence the strategy of the war.
