HORSES RETIRED
“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, August.l6 Four long-service workers for the Hamilton City Council have been “paid off.” They, or their predecessors, have been a fimilar sight in Hamilton
streets for more than 40 years. They are the four horses used for street cleaning. Perhaps the best known is Mollie, which, with Mr J. Adlam, has ■ been seen enjoying her morning tea outside a Hamilton East milk bar for the last eight years. Mollie is partial to bread, and while her master has his smoko each day Mollie has enjoyed a large box of bread alongside the footpath. All the horses, put out of work by modern street cleaning machines, are going to good homes on farms. Their drivers, Mr Adlam and Mr H. Lewis (who has been foreman for 17 years), Mr J. Ander- ' son and Mr R. Holloway, will be absorbed into other coun- i cil work. 1 The work has been done by contract for the last 18 years, i the contractor to the council i being a Hamilton taxi driver, i Mr J. L. Dike. i
