Gutted By Fire
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N., Aug. 16. The premises of the Manawatu Carding Company were gutted by fire in a spectacular blaze this evening. The alarm was given at 10.26 p.m. and about 40 firemen from the Palmerston North station and four engines fought the blaze for nearly three hours.
A portion of the roof of the factory had collapsed by the time Pie fire was noticed and this greatly hampered the efforts of the firemen.
A large crowd quickly assembled, many coming from the theatre and the professional wrestling. Police and Transport Department officials were called out to control the heavy volume of traffic.
The building is about two chains wide and 50 yards long.
