Obituary
MR F. J. STEEL The death occurred recently of Mr Francis James Steel, well known in the Hawarden district for manyyears for his thoroughbred Jersey cattle. He was 83. Born and educated in Christchurch, Mr Steel left for Australia at an early age. On the outbreak of World War I he enlisted in the Australian forces. After four years in the artillery Mr Steel was invalided home, and returned to New Zealand.
For more than 30 years Mr Steel was engaged in dairy farming in North Canterbury. He was secretary of the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association and of the Hawarden-Waikari branch of the Returned Services’ Association. For his long association and his work in the interests of returned servicemen in the district he was awarded the R.S.A. Gold Star .badge and certificate of merit in 1948. Mr Steel, whose wife died four years ago, is survived by two sisters.
