“The Press” In 1865
AUGUST 17. PARLIAMENT.—We had hoped to have furnished our readers with accurate reports of the proceedings of the General Assembly from the commencement of the Session, having made arrangements to that effect by the engagement of special reporters. Circumstances, however, have hitherto prevented our doing so. but by the last mail from Wellington we received reports of the debates on the three previous days, and shall henceforward be in a position to publish them regularly. Fortunately, no discussions on points of
importance took place during the first fortnight.
KAIAPOI TOWN BELL.—The bell for the toll-house at Kaiapoi has arrived, and was placed in its proper position above the Council chamber on Wednesday last This bell is a present to the town of Kaiapoi from their respected member, W. Wilson, Esq. Owing to some little defect in the swinging, it is not so audible as was expected, but the tone is very good, and after this little defect is remedied, it will answer its intended purpose. The bell is of brass and measures about twenty inches across, and was cast, we believe, at the foundry of Mr Anderson, Christchurch.
