Hit Over Line Wins Quatre Bras Cup
Nelson beat Ashburton on an appalling surface at Barrington Park in the final of the Quatre Bras Cup, a trophy for which the minor hockey associations of the northern half of the South Island compete.
Although Ashburton had much the better of the play because of its success in prosecuting a right flank strategy, each team had scared three goals when the match concluded. Play was continued, and Nelson finally gained the verdict by a hit over Ashburton’s back line in the twentythird minute of extra time. Although Nelson seldom used its own right flank, there was a significant lesson for it in the fact that all its goals originated in attacks from this area.
Play was very scrappy, and moved from end to end by means of lengthy hits, there being little that was constructive in the respective defences, which were mainly of bustling, spoiling nature. N. File was prominent for Nelson at centre-half, and J. Cahill was somewhat out of context at inside-right by producing some neat stickwork at times.
The Ashburton halves, N. Bishop and R. Hortin, gave some distinction to their team’s efforts, and B. Wilson, the inside-right, led his forwards capably. Goals were scored for Nelson by Cahill, File and A.
Harris, and Cahill scored the vital hit over the back line. The Ashburton goals were scored by Bishop (2) and G. Prouting. Umpires: Messrs N. Dailey and W. Perry.
