WALLABY DRIVE

1825 Animals Shot

A tally of 1826 wallabies has been shot in the Hunters Hills by men of the New Zealand Forest Service in a campaign which ended last week. It was a follow-up to extensive shooting operations last year, when 4063 animals were destroyed.

As a result of this winter’s campaign, which began in the first week of June, the number of wallabies in the Hunters Hills area is now thought to be fairly low.

“This will be checked on by a field survey in two or three weeks’ time,” said a forest service spokesman yesterday. Heavy snow in the Hunters Hills in recent weeks helped the drive against the wallabies, keeping them confined to lower areas and preventing their getting away when fired on.

In all, 18 men were engaged in the operations.
