Conley Hat-Trick In 9-0 Win
On a playing surface that called for good ball control, the minimum of running with the ball and physical stamina, the reshuffled Canterbury senior eleven crushed Nelson, 9-0, at English Park on Saturday.
Superior in all facets of the game and exploiting to the full the many weaknesses in the Nelson side, Canterbury went straight into the attack from the first whistle.
The early minutes brought eager shots from K. Olley, T. Conley and P. Kay, anu after 11 minutes Kay opened the scoring with a great headed goal from R. Batchelor’s pass. Two minutes later it was again Kay’s head that put Canterbury two ahead from a fine cross by Torkington. Receiving excellent support from the wing-halves. Batchelor and H. Taylor, the Canterbury forwards were able to keep an almost constant pressure on the Nelson goal. Good Goal-keeping
Only good anticipation and quick reaction by the visiting goal-keeper, D. Corlett, kept the scoring to a reasonable level. But he .had no chance with Canterbury's next two goals. The first came from a penalty by Conley after a foul on Kay, and just before half-time it was Conley again, moving into a goalmouth scramble to slide home number four.
On the resumption Nelson tried to tighten up the game but Canterbury continued to dominate with strong attacking play. Torkington, on the leftwing, worked very well to lay on the fifth goal, the ball being placed over the advancing goalThe next goal brought Conley his hat-trick and was a fierce low drive under Corlett's body. Torkington added the seventh with a good drive into the roof of the net from 18 yards. As the game drew to a close further goals were added by Batchelor and Olley. Never Threatened
The Canterbury defence had never been seriously threatened. Whenever the Nelson forwards had tried to break through they were invariably stopped by the centre-half, G. Griffiths, and the full-backs, J. Chalmers and A. Hawthorne, before being able to get in a telling shot. The goal-keeper, D. Smith, had been kept in the game by defensive back passes and used
the ball to advantage with his clearances.
The Christchurch Boys’ High School forward, I. Walter, was brought into the team at insideleft in place of the unfit D. Bussey. Although not among the goal-scorers, he played his part well. Determined Winner The Canterbury under-18 team took the field in the curtainraiser determined to erase the 1-0 defeat it suffered at Nelson in the Junior National Cup. Playing fast football and showing good understanding, Canterbury overwhelmed Nelson under 18, 9-0.
The fine display by B. Hool, at centre-forward, earned him five goals. A. Robinson 12), C. Jones and D. Glubb were the other scorers. It was a fine result for the Canterbury team.
