S. Korea Ratifies Pact With Japan

SEOUL, August 14.
The South Korean National Assembly today ratified pacts to restore normal ties with Japan for the first time in 60 years.
The vote - was 110 to nil, with one abstention.
Opposition members were not present for the vote. The entire Opposition boycotted the Assembly meeting, refusing to share responsibility for approving what they called “humiliating sell-out" pacts.
Under the pacts, which have still to be ratified by the Japanese Diet, diplomatic relations will be established [between Jhe two countries,
and Japan will provide Korea [With 800 million dollars worth of grants and credits. I The Deputy-Prime Minis|ter, Mr Key-young Chang, told the Assembly the money was in the nature of reparations and would be used to speed up economic development in the next three years. The agreements also provide for settlement of fisheries disputes and Korean property claims, and for the status of some 53,000 Koreans Hiving in Japan.
