BIG RIVER PROJECT
U.S.-Canadian Co-operation (N.Z.P .A.-Reuter) VANCOUVER. ’ Work has started on the big Columbia river project in British Columbia. The project, which involves the Governments of Canada, the United States and British Columbia, has taken 20 years to negotiate and will cost about £l66m.
The treaty governing the development was proclaimed by the Prime Minister, Mr Lester Pearson, and President Johnson at a CanadianUnited States border ceremony last year. British Columbia will build three dams to control the flow of the river and reduce the danger of floods on the American side of the border.
The Columbia flows through British Columbia for : much of its length before turning south into the United States and entering the Pacific on the southern border of the state of Washington. Hydro-electric power will be generated both in Canada and the United States.
