TWO INNOCENTS ABROAD
We Never Meant to go so Far—By Mavis Ronson. Andre Deutsch, 160 pp., maps and illustrations.
In 1955 two 19-year-old girls left London for a short holiday on the Continent. They returned five years later after visiting nearly every country and major island in the Near and Far East. In the time they were away they grew from a pair of innocents into Foreign Correspondents although they never lost the naive optimism which was their best passport. In Bunna they investigated the opium industry in the Shan States—strictly forbidden, but it didn’t occur to them to ask for permission.
They were in an ambush In Indonesia and riot in Calcutta. When the bisexual Bissus were dancing, they were watching, if Chou En-Lai, Nehru, the Dalai Lama or President Sukarno were around, so were the dauntless girls and soon the great men were smiling on them. The story is told with freshness and spirit and is illustrated with 24 pages of the author’s photographs. —Price 31s, Postage 9d.
