DEATH OF CHILD

Jury Acquits Mother (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 13. A jury in the Supreme Court at Auckland today found a mother of eight not guilty of a charge of the manslaughter of her four-year-old daughter. The jury reached the cerdict after a retirement of five and a half hours. Mr Justice Hardie Boys discharged the accused, Te Arahara Adams, aged 27, of Whangarei, who had pleaded not guilty to a charge that on or about June 10, 1965, at Whangarei, she unlawfully killed Michelle Huiarea Adams. She was represented by Mr J. S. Henry, with him Mr M A. Armstrong. Mr S. A. Cleal conducted the case for the Crown. In his summing up his Honour warned jurors not to allow horror, sympathy or emotion to weigh in the verdict. After two and three-quarter hours, the jury returned to ask his Honour for a transcript of his summing-up. As this was not available, his Honour again defined the law relating to manslaughter and infanticide.
