Air Controllers’ Pay Inquiry
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 13. A committee to inquire into the salary rates and conditions of service of air traffic controllers was named today by the chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Government Administration (Mr Shand). Mr J. W. P. Watts, a solicitor, of Wellington, will be chairman. The members are Mr D. P, Lynskey, of Blenheim, who is general manager of Straits Air Freight Express Ltd., and Captain J. H. Register, of Christchurch, formerly training supervisor of the National Airways Corporation. Assessors will be appointed by the State Services Commission and the Public Service Association, which will represent the air traffic controllers.
The terms of reference of the committee are “to examine and report on the structure and conditions of service of air traffic controllers and the basis on which their pay should be determined in relations to their duties.” The constitution of the committee is based upon that of one known as the Radley committee, which completed an inquiry into salaries and conditions of service of air traffic
controllers in Britain some months ago. Mr Shand said the committee had been set up in accordance with an undertaking last December that this would be done if the State Services Commission and the Public Service Association were unable to agree on proposals for new terms and conditions of service.
He said he hoped the committee would be able to begin its sittings shortly.
