Each Fellow will be expected to carry out an approved reaearch programme in the causation, prevention and cure of disease. Although the founder expressed a preference for research work in Diabetes Melbtus, applications from candidates whose interests lie in other fields will be welcome. Each Fellowship will be tenable for one year. The value of the Fellowships will be within the range £AIB9O-£A2150. The appointees will be expected to take up their Fellowships on January 1, 1966, or on such ©ther date as may be arranged, preferably .n appropriate departments of the School of Medicine of The University of Western Australia. Registrar. w 2965 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES THE JOHN CURTIN SCHOOL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION CHAIR OF CLINICAL SCIENCE APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment to the Chair of Clinical Science in the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Institute of Advanced Studies. The Professor will be Head of a new Department of Clinical Science to be established as a department of the John Curtin School, but housed in a new wing of the Canberra Community Hospital. Construction of this wing will soon commence, and an area in it of approximately SOOO square feet has been allotted to the Department of Clinical Science. The date of appointment is subject to negotiation, but it is hoped that the Professor will be able to suggest his requirements for laboratory layout and equipment before the new Hospital wing is ready for occupation in December, 1966. Plans have been developed for the staffing of the department and the provision of funds for research equipment and running expenses; details may be obtained on request. There Is no restriction placed on the field of clinical science in which the department will be expected to concentrate its interests. There will be opportunities for the staff of the new department to form close links with one or more of the existing groups in the John Curtin School, i.e. in Biochemistry. Physical Biochemistry, Medical Chemistry, Microbiology, Experi mental Pathology, Genetics. Physiology and Electron Microscopy. The School is well equipped for research in all of the fields mentioned, and there are also animal breeding and workshop facilities. The staff of the Department of Clinical Science will be able to utilise these facilities as well as those already available in the Canberra Community Hospital. There is no undergraduate faculty of medicine within the University at present, and the Department of Clinical Science will operate entirely as a research department, being able to take research scholars for courses leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The University has a postgraduate awards scheme and students would be able to apply for awards tenable in the Department of Clinical Science. The salary of the Professor of Clinical Science will be £A5700 per annum, and he will be entitled to one year’s study leave on full pay, plus a grant of up to £AI6OO towards expenses, within each four-year period. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern, with supplementary benefits. The University will pay first-class fares for the appointee and his family and will also provide a grant towards the costs of removal of furniture and effects. The University would also provide assistance in housing. The successful applicant will undertake research into economic and management problems of Australian wool producers with particular reference to northern New South Wales. The programme will be carried out under the general supervision of Professor John L. Dillon. Head of the Department of Farm Management.

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT: Salary will be within the range £A2400 to £A3170 with commencing salary determined according to qualifications and experience. Provision ts made for travel and removal expenses incurred in taking up the appointment, which is tenable initially for a three-year period. The research programme proposed may afford an excellent opportunity to work towords a higher degree ©r to acquire post-doctoral experience.
