When this article was referred to the University of Canterbury for comment, the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) said: “The points raised by Mr Oakley are essentially matters of personal opinion. The council of the University of Canterbury was under no pressure whatsover from any quarter in selecting its consulting architects for the new university and in choosing the architects for the next group of teaching buildings. For both of these tasks it appointed the Ministry of Works. The senior planning architect visited Australian universities specifically to examine library buildings. I am confident that the final result at Ilam will be exciting and imaginative, in spite of Mr Oakley’s fears.
