GALLACHER DIES
Outspoken M.P. (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) GLASGOW, Aug. 13. Mr William “Willie” Gallacher, the only British M.P. to speak in 1938 against the flight of the then Prime Minister, Mr Neville Chamberlain to Munich for talks with Hitler. died last night, aged 83. Scots-born, the former member of Parliament had been associated with the Communist movement since 1920. He was party president in Britain from 1956 to 1963. All his life he had preached violent revolution, organised strikes at critical moments, and led mass marches which led to bloody fights; he tried to sabotage the nation’s war effort. Yet, when elected to Parliament, the nation removed his sting by laughing at his wisecracks but ignoring speeches made in serious vein.
