Still Surplus? Forty army surplus waterbottles had arrived, for civil defence stores, but they were all without stoppers, the County Clerk (Mr W. F. Aydon) told the Wairewa County Council yesterday. Red Lights Three tiers of red lights began to glow on the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation’s aerial mast on Sugarloaf Hill yesterday. Mr R- G. Tulloch, the corporation’s regional engineer, said the lights would shine continuously from now on. They were intended as a warning to aircraft, but the move had not been requested by any other department. The top light is 2000 ft above sea level —4ooft higher than the top of the hill. Wages Problem Little River business people have complained to the Wairewa County Council that they are unable to cash council pay cheques. The County Clerk (Mr W. F. Aydon) told the council yesterday that since a bank agency had closed, he had been unable to pay wages in cash, and the Post Office could not help. The chairman (Mr W. C. Miller) said the council might be able to get a security service to deliver wages in cash. Dearer Cheese Retail prices of mild and tasty cheese have been increased in Christchurch by 4d a pound. Mild cheese will now cost 3s a pound, medium tasty 3s Bd, and tasty 4s 4d. Some shops sold cheese yesterday at the new prices; others are expected to increase their prices on Monday. According to one retailer the increases apply only to new stocks of cheese which are being received. Calm Day The weather in Christchurch yesterday was cloudy. The wind in the morning was light and variable, and changed to an easterly direction at midday. At 6 a.m. the temperature at Harewood was <0 degrees, and at noon it was 45 degrees. The maximum temperature at the Botanic Gardens was also 48 degrees. At 5 p.m. the temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 47 degrees. Coin Collector Seven years ago an 18-year-old Wellington student, Robert Harnor, began collecting 1935 threepenny pieces after reading that they were valued at Is 9d each. Today they are worth £5 each, and he has at least 39. In his quest he used to search through the honesty boxes of his father, a newsvendor. In 1935 only 40,364 threepenny pieces were minted. Six million were minted in 1934. X-Ray Campaign The 691 chest X-ray photographs taken by the Health Department’s mobile unit in Spreydon and Beckenham this week brought the total since the city campaign began on July 8 to 6644. The unit will be in Manchester street on Monday, in Moorhouse avenue on Tuesday, and then prepare for the Industries Fair on Thursday.
