Canadian Breaks Butterfly Record

<N.Z PA.-Reuter — Copyright) BLACKPOOL (Lancashire), August 13. The Canadian. Dan Sherry, a 19-year-old salesman from Toronto, achieved a three-year ambition at the British swimming championships in Blackpool last night when he shattered the world men’s 110 yards butterfly record.

He then announced that he may retire at the end of these championships. The Canadian won the title last night in 58.1 sec. and this lowered the existing world best by the Australian Olympic champion, Kevin Berry by nine-tenths of a second. “I am thinking seriously of retiring now that I have broken the world record. I've been trying for it for three vears and it might be an idea to go out with a bang,” he said.

In Toledo, Ohio, Patti Caretto, a 14-year-old California girl, improved on her own world record for the 1500 metres freestyle swim, with a time of 18min 23.75ec. Swimming in the national A„A.U. championships, she and the second place finisher, Sharon Finneran, of California, both bettered the record of 18min 30.5 sec which Miss Caretto set last year. Miss Finneran’s time yesterday was ISmin 29.25ec.
