CHARACTER TO CHANGE

Central Area Of Sydney CN.Z. Prets Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY, Aug. 10. A revolution fa the character of the central city area .of Sydney within a few years was envisaged in an announcement yesterday by the New South Wales Government. Residential buildings will be allowed in the mile and a half between the Central railway station and Circular quay, now given over almost entirely to shops and offices. The New South Wales Minister for Local Government (Mr P. H. Morton) said that the new regulations would allow mixed development and bring Sydney into line with such cittes as Paris and New York. Such mixed development would turn a dead after-dark city into one that was alive 24 hours a day, he said. It would also bring new life into uptown areas of Sydney towards the Central railway where many businesses, including several department stares, have failed in recent years.
