TROTTING Leading Pacers In Trials At Addington

Five of the six top winners among the pacers last season will parade at trials to be held at Addington Raceway today by the Canterbury Trotting Owners’ and Breeders’ Association. Entries for the trials include the majority of the horses engaged at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting which opens on Saturday week.

Four of the five big winners will compete in the 2-11 class pace, which will be run over 13 furlongs. They are Lordship (£11,790), Robin Dundee (£9085), Jay Ar (£8845), Disband (£5385) and Jacobite (£5205). The only one missing is Cairnbrae (£5320). Disband is an entry for the 2-13 class pace today.

Lordship will give away starts of up to 54 yards in today’s race, which will start about 1.35 p.m. Jay Ar, on 18 yards, and Tactile, on 24 yards are the only others handicapped further back than 12 yards. Most of the entries in today’s main event will be candidates for the Lightning Handicap, a £l3OO sprint event on the first day of the meeting. The Lightning Handicap has drawn 16 entries, including the majority of the top pacers in commission. Particular interest at today’s trials will centre in the reappearance of Orbiter, which has not raced since he finished fourth in the Champion

Free-for-all won by Great Adios at Auckland on December 31. Orbiter was not at his best at that meeting, but he has had a long spell in which to recover fully. His record last term was outstanding and he is expected to develop into one of the biggest winners among the pacers this season. Lochgair, one of the topranked four-year-old pacers of last season, Idaho and Garcon d’Or are others expected to attract considerable interest today. Lochgair and Idaho are two horses which will attempt to qualify for the New Zealand Cup in the next two months.

They will contest the Louisson Handicap on the first day of the national meeting, to be followed a week later by the £l5OO National Handicap, in which they will race under invitation conditions and be opposed by such horses as Lordship, Robin Dundee, Jay Ar and Tactile. Great Prospect Disband will start from 12 yards in the 2:13 class pace, which has also attracted some interesting entries. Disband has been entered for the Louisson and National Handicaps. After her outstanding efforts of last season, which included a third behind Jay Ar and Robin Dundee in the Inter-Dominion Championship Grand Final at Forbury Park earlier in the year, Disband is one of a rather long list of early fancies for the New Zealand Cup in November. Golden Oriole will be among the main rivals of Disband in today’s race. She will not race at the national meeting, but might resume next month. Space Cadet, Wendy Dawn, Cloudage and Jilaire are among the other well-per-formed horses in the same race., Doctor Barry, the topranked three-year-old of last season, will parade in the second heat of the 2:15 class pace, Sheridan, La Garrison and the three-year-old, Scotch Cherie, will be among the horses to arouse interest in this event.

Roydon Prince, Friendly Tom, Night Rocket, Batavia and Happy Ending are among an even lot down to contest the first heat of this race. Atanui, a good third in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes when having her first race start, Mount Eden, Inky Boy, Bass Strait and Queensway are certain to ensure an interesting contest in the first heat of the 2:20 class pace. They all showed great potential towards the end of last season. Promising trotters in Break Through and Field Chief will receive spirited opposition in their race from Snow Globe, Flying Maiden and Fourina. The qualifying test race will be run in four heats. Entries in all four include a high proportion of three-year-olds, a number of which showed promise in restricted careers last season. The programme, which will start at 11 a.m., will include 11 races.
