WHANGAREI. August 11
The Springbok manager, Mr J. F. Louw, said today he has decided to ask for consultations with the New Zealand Rugby Union about refereeing interpretations.
! Mr Louw said that he ■would approach the chairi man. Mr T. C. Morrison, re- ■ garding certain matters of law. He conceded that a convening of the special laws subcommittee set up by the N.Z.R.U, for the tour could result from this. The sub-committee met Mr Louw w’hen the tourists arrived in Gisborne and it was understood that further meetings could result if circumstances warranted. Asked if it would be right ;to assume that incidents in recent matches when tempers had flared were responsible! jfor his decision. Mr Louw! (said: ‘That is for you to con-! I sider, not me.” I
I The Springbok manager .also refused to comment on ithe rough play in today’s I match against .Northland,
during which players were cautioned and the two captains, C. M. Smith (South Africa) and D. S. Webb (Northland), were called together by the referee, Mr L. S. Kirk, of Canterbury. Regarding the match as a whole, however. Mr Louw said he did not think that the best interests of Rugby had been served. In a speech after today’s game, and also when interviewed later, Mr Louw made a light-hearted reference to the Treaty of Waitangi. “It is strange that in this r district where the treaty was i signed, no clause has been in--5 serted in it concerning , Rugby,” he said.
