An OmbudsWoman?
, (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, August 11. i Britain’s first ombudsman might be a woman. Dame 'Evelyn Sharp, aged 62. Britain’s top woman civil servant and “a formidably, efficient administrator,” is suggested for the job by the “Daily Mirror.” She is due to retire shortly from her £8750-a-year post as Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Local Government. Dame Evelyn has already postponed her retirement once at the request of the Minister of Housing (Mr Crossman). The newspaper says a number of ministers frankly regard her as the perfect prototype for ombudsman, and Mr Wilson is privately in favour of the idea. The new job will be the subject of an autumn White Paper and a bill in the next session.
