Trade Mission To U.K. ‘Worth While’

The senior New Zealand Trade Commissioner designate to London, Mr H. C. Holden, said yesterday in Christchurch that he would be delighted if the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation sent a trade mission to the United Kingdom.

“While it is a highly competitive market for manufactured goods, it is also a market of great opportunity,” he said.

Mr Holden said he thought a survey of the possibility of getting manufactured goods into that market would be worth while. Many of New Zealand's products were competitive with those of other nations, and there was no reason why they should not be in the United Kingdom also.

Mr Holden thought that what New Zealand had to do was to make some sort of survey of the United Kingdom’s needs, in relation to New Zealand’s production, and to have a look again at the products New Zealand was able to sell to such countries as the United States. Agricultural implements were mentioned by Mr Holden as a possibility

Mi Holden is being posted to London for three years. His area will include West Germany, Italy and Spain.

He does not think the marketing of New Zealand’s primary products in the United Kingdom is likely to get easier when the dairy and meat agreements terminate in 1967

It was honed to get more access for New Zealand meal Sand dairy products into Italy and West Germany. New Zealand had seen an indication that Italy proposed, and perhaps to a lesser extent, West Germany, to be interested in importing New Zealand products. Italy had shown a clear interest in importing New Zealand meat. At present New Zealand was putting some shipments of beef and sheep meats into Italy.

Mr Holden said that he was nrobably the first fully quailified economist to take up the ' London post. He was certainly the first departmental economist to take the job. He replaces Mr K. L. Press, who is returning to New Zea-

land to be assistant secretary, overseas trade, in the Department of Industries and Commerce. Mr Holden’s full designation will be senior trade commissioner and commercial counsellor.

Till recently he has been director of trade relations and economist in the head office of the Department of Industries and Commerce. He has attended a number of important overseas conferences as an economic adviser, but has not held any previous overseas post.
