NO SOLUTION IN GREECE

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) ATHENS, August 11. King Constantine, of Greece, tonight appeared to be in the gravest position yet in the country’s political crisis, the Associated Press reported.

As public impatience mounted, his second effort to solve the problem failed. But hopes of a solution to the 27-day-old troubles appeared to be centred on formation of a national coalition Government, with two men

suggested as likely leaders, Reuter reported. Political observers said the King, searching for a fresh formula to break the stalemate, may try to form a Government of all parties except the United Democratic Left (E.D.A.) Party. E.D.A. is considered as a

front for the outlawed Greek Communist Party. The two men being mentioned as possible candidates for the Premiership are Professor Zenophon Zolotas, a 61-year-old scholar and governor of the Bank of Greece, and Mr Demetrios Kioussopoulos, aged 73, the retired prosecutor-general of the Supreme Court. Mr Kioussopoulous was Prime Minister in 1952. The 25-year-old Greek Monarch’s latest choice for a compromise Prime Minister, Mr Stephanos Stephanopoulos, yesterday rejected the assignment. Mr Stephanopoulos, deputyleader of the majority Centre Union Party, handed back his mandate to form a new government when the party, led by the deposed

Premier, George Papandreou, voted against letting Mr Stephanopoulos take on the job.

Caretaker Government

A caretaker Government, without popular backing in Parliament, now rules Greece, headed by the King’s first nominee, Mr George Athanassiades-Novas. The Novas Cabinet, which split the Centre Union Party, was set up last month after Mr Papandreou resigned in a dispute with the King.
