“The Press” In 1865
AUGUST 12 THE NEW ZEALAND.—A report was current in town last evening that this steamer has been wrecked on the north spit of the Hokitika bar. At the time the mail left that port on Monday no tidings of such an occurrence had transpired, and in the want of some authentic information on the matter, we must treat the rumour as a canard. The last intelligence we have of the steamer is contained in the “Nelson Examiner." of the Bth inst., in which paper she is re-
ported to have sailed, after having made one unsuccessful attempt to reach Hokitika, on the 4th inst.; and in our own correspondent’s letter, from Hokitika, she is reported as lying off the Bar at the time the mail left. AN ANAGRAM.—The following anagram might express a discontented exclamation from some colonist who had expected that General Cameron would be’ able to the Native disturbances:— General D. A. Cameron—No nearer calm, egad!
