MAGISTRATES COURT Stole Articles Worth £4287 In Three Burglaries

Goods valued at £4287 17s 6d were stolen in three burglaries by the accused and his accomplices, Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary told Mr K. H. J. Headjfen, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Before the Court was David Barry Mathias, aged 18, an unemployed workman (Mr M. F. Hobbs), who pleaded guilty to charges of breaking and entering the premises of Lloyd’s Watchmakers on July 12, breaking and entering the premises of T. Armstrong and Company, Ltd., on July 14, breaking and entering the premises of Bartlett’s Jewellers on July 21, unlawfully taking a car valued at £450, the property of Somerset Motors, on July 13, unlawfullytaking a car valued at £llOO. the property of Cliff Jones Motors, on July 21, and being idle and disorderly on July 16 in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. Mathias was convicted and remanded in custody to August 17 for sentence. Mathias had previously elected trial by jury on all charges, but changed his election and pleaded guilty yes-

terday. Senior-Sergeant Cleary said watches and rings worth £225 15s were stolen from the shop of Lloyd’s Watchmakers. The accused claimed that all the stolen property had been sold. The police had not recovered any of it. Radios, electric shavers, and clothing valued at £902 Ils were stolen from T. Armstrong and Company, Ltd. None of it had been recovered. Mathias had told the police that it was sold to a receiver. Inquiries were being made. Property valued at £3159 Ils 6d was stolen from Bartlett’s Jewellers, and £2849 11s 6d worth had been recovered. Both cars had been recovered.

Mathias had previous convictions, Senior-Sergeant Cleary said. BOOKMAKER FINED A fine of £lOO was imposed on Douglas Henry Meier, aged 50, a compositor (Mr K. N. Hampton), who was convicted on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on August 10. Meier pleaded guilty. An order was also made for the removal of Meier’s telephone. Senior-Sergeant Cleary said that at 12.20 p.m. on August 10 a police party searched Meier’s home at 295 Pages road. Meier denied that he had received bets, but while the police were there a caller on the telephone placed a bet for the race meeting at Riccarton. A pad carrying details of bets on the Riccarton race meeting was also found Meier told the police that he was doing it for a friend. Mr Hampton said that Meier was acting as a bookmaker’s agent. The total of bets placed that day was £73, which was abnormally high for a week day. Meier accepted wagers only from his friends, and received a commission of only Is in the £l.

He had no previous convictions, said Mr Hampton. DISQUALIFIED DRIVER Roriald John Beran, aged 32, a storehand (Mr G. T. Mahon), was fined £3O and admitted to probation for one year when he appeared for sentence on a charge of driving while disqualified at Hilderthorpe on February 13. His licence was also cancelled for one year.

CONVICTED AND DISCHARGED Charged with being unlawfully on a building on August 11, Alan Charles Jolley, aged 21, an assistant engineer, pleaded guilty. Malcolm Stuart Kellaway, aged 22, a clerk, also pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully getting into a car on the same date. Both were convicted and discharged, with an order for the payment of costs. An application by Jolley for the suppression of his name was refused.

Senior-Sergeant Cleary said that at 1 a.m. yesterday the accused were seen acting suspiciously in Manchester street. One got into a parked car, and the other climbed a fire escape on a building in Bedford row. Both were under the influence of alcohol. IDLE AND DISORDERLY Heather Dawn Hodge, aged 18, unemployed, was convicted and remanded on bail to August 19 for sentence on a charge of being idle and disorderly on August 11 in that she had insufficient lawful means of support. She pleaded guilty. SUSPENDED SENTENCE Charged with theft of an iron valued at £2 on June 9, Marie Ellice Baken, aged 20, unemployed, pleaded guilty. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months. An order was made for the return of the property. I The Magistrate said that because Baken was already on probation, she would be given a suspended sentence. .BREACH OF PROBATION Charged with breach of probation on July 16 in failing to report to the probation officer, Kevin Charles Stillwell, aged 19, pleaded, guilty. He was convicted and fined £5. REMANDED Peter Lloyd Machlrus, aged 19, a workman, was remanded in custody to August 25 for the taking of depositions when he appeared on three charges of burglary, two charges of unlawfully taking a car. and one of breach of probation.
