Silver Reclamation

Eastern Air Lines’ maintenance quality control department at Miami International Airport is recovering 94 per cent pure silver metal at the rate of five troy ounces monthly. The metal is recovered from X-ray film, used with radio-active isotopes, in making inspections of aircraft engine interiors and structures. The film’s coating is silver bromide which is generally washed away during film processing. As the in-spection-process uses 4000 square yards of film monthly the silver loss is sizeable. The used fluid is now passed through a recovery unit where the silver is extracted by electrolysis.
