AUSTRALIAN COINS
Warning By Milkmen Milkmen in Christchurch are warning their customers against leaving Australian coins in milk bottles. They have assessed the value of Australian florins, shillings, sixpences, and threepences in New Zealand currency and are now leaving only as much milk as the coin is worth. “Up to four weeks ago the banks were accepting Australian coins," said Mr P. A. Caithness, president of the Milk Vendors’ Association. “But now they are crediting us with only the New Zealand equivalent. “We work in the dark, and we can’t tell if the coins left out for us are New Zealand or Australian. I got a couple of Australian shillings from one house just the other day. They’re only worth 9d each.” Mr B. F. Le Beaux, a member of the association’s executive, said he had been losing 5s a week by accepting Australian coins over the last month. The association has had 20,000 notices printed, telling customers that Australian coins are not acceptable as payment for milk or cream. Customers are asked to note that an Australian florin Is worth only Is 6d in New Zealand currency, Is is worth 9d, 6d is worth sd, and 3d is worth 2d.
