Magistrate’s Court Two Youths Fined And Barred From Driving

Appearing before Mr E. A. tee. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous in Fitzgerald avenue on June 15, lan Stutheridge, aged 17, a factory hand, was convicted, fined £l5, disqualified from driving for one year, and ordered to attend a course of traffic lectures. He pleaded guilty.

Traffic Officer A. Laing said that at 5.40 p.m. on June 15 the defendant’s motor-cycle travelled north along Fitzgerald avenue over one intersection at a speed of about 40 miles an hour. A check over two uncontrolled intersections and one T-intersection showed a speed of 42 miles an hour. Visibility was not good, traffic was heavy, and the street lighting was poor. Rodger John Farrant, aged Is. an apprentice (Mr M. J. Glue), was convicted and fined £lO and his licence was cancelled for one year on a charge of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous in Moorhouse avenue on June 13. Farrant was also ordered to attend a course of traffic lectures. He pleaded guilty. CARELESS USE Charged with careless use nf a motor vehicle on the Main North road on April 24, Francis David Lee, a watersider (Mr G. S. Brockett), pleaded not guilty. He was convicted and fined £3, and was ordered to pay witnesses* expenses of £6. Michael Paul Joseph Wheeler said that at 6.20 p.m. on April 24 he pulled to the middle of the road to make a right-hand turn. While he was waiting, his car was struck in the rear by the defendant’s car. All his lights were going, and his indicator was operating. In defence, Lee said that there were no lights on Wheeler’s car, and he did not see it until it came into the range of his dipped headlights. The Magistrate said he accepted that Wheeler’s car was showing lights. Because of the large amount of witnesses’ expenses, the fine would be reduced. SHOPLIFTING Charged with theft of a jar of hair-cream and two pairs of socks, valued at 19s lOd. the property of Woolworths (N.Z.) Ltd..' William Thomas Reynolds, aged 58. a workman. pleaded guilty. He was convicted and fined £lO. and an order was made for the return of the property. Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary said that at 4 p.m. on August 5 the accused was seen putting the articles into his pocket. He left the shop without paying for them. When stopped, he was found to be intoxicated. Reynolds said in mitigation that he went into the shop with the intention of paying for the goods. (Before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M.) COSTS ONLY Charged with careless use of a motor-vehicle at the inintersection of Selwyn street and Milton street on June 17, William Norman Hunt, a fitter and turner (Mr M. J. Glue), pleaded not guilty. He was convicted and ordered to pay costs. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge against Peter Matthew Grant, a woolbuyer (Mr B. A. Barren), of overtaking a vehicle stopped to yield the right of way to a Pedestrian on a crossing in Cathedral square on May ?S. was dismissed. Grant pleaded not guilty.
