Combined Defence Orders Explored

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 10

Exploratory talks on whether Australia might be manufacturing defence equipment for which Australia and New Zealand could combine orders were held in Wellington today.

The discussion, which lasted one hour and a half, was between the Australian Minister for Supply (Mr Fairhall) and the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre). Mr Eyre said tonight general information on Australianmade defence weapons was exchanged. but nothing was decided. “Mr Fairhall invited us to send people to work with their defence research and de-

velopment organisation,” Mr Eyre said when asked if either he or Mr Fairhall had any propositions to make. “Mr Fairhall also wished to encourage New Zealand manufacturers to tender for Australian defence requirements, and it is open for us to do so.” Mr Eyre said the aim of the talks was the closest co-opera-tion to strengthen the defence industry of Australia and New Zealand.
