Beaufort Was Easy For Cinnamon

Ginnaman had well-earned compensation for his Grand National second in the £lOOO Beaufort Steeplechase at Riccarton yesterday.

Mr and Mrs J. C. Irving’s Blenheimtrained Tauloch gelding was a dominating favourite, and he dominated the race from the start by making all the running.

Cinnaman's fast, even jumping and free galloping on ground to his liking had the others in trouble some way out. Flying Swift was fairly close behind him going to the last fence, but only on sufferance. At the end Cinnaman was out by seven lengths from the Matangi jumper, which beat Big Talk by five lengths. Consistent Ginnaman has thrived on a successful programme of winter racing. His last eight starts have produced two wins—the other one was in the Wanganui Steeplechase—four seconds, one third, and one fourth. Big Talk jumped better than most of the others in the race for the first round, and appeared to be going well close behind Cinnaman until he hooked the first of the kennels double. He was unable to make another run after Cinnaman, but his third held promise of an improved performance in the Lincoln Steeplechase next Saturday. Paid £7B The others felt the strain a long way from home.

Grant was fourth in a gap of six lengths behind Bi'g Talk. Syditrev brought off the major surprise of the meeting by winning the Hunt Cup at Riccarton yesterday. After being responsible for much of the pacemaking he won by three-quarters of a length from Southern Cloud and paid £7B 8s 6d to win and £lO 12s 6d for a place. Sydtrev is a 12-year-old by The Unicorn, a New Zealand Derby winner, out of Lady Scholar, a New Zealand Oaks winner. This was only his third start for Mr J. B.‘ Brown, who won the Auckland Cup last season with Lucky Son. Sydtrev did his earlier racing for Mr Brown’s father-in-law, Mr A. Smiley, but he was away from racing for about two years before the recent South Canterbury Hunt meeting. It was an eventful race. The favourite, Facade, was brought down when David John fell in his path at the fifth fence. Sydtrev led into the last round alongside Windsor Castle, went to a length’s lead at the nine furlongs, was equal second behind Jolly Fox at the kennels double, but took charge again just after the last fence; Southern Cloud’s second was the reward for a rather remarkable ride by J. H. Hely. The Woodville gelding was under a hard ride and a long way from the lead a mile out, and his chance looked hopeless even at the second last fence. His chance brightened when Dark Jester lost his rider at the last fence, and he caught the tiring Barney and Jolly Fox in the final furlong. Barney, which ran about in the run from the last fence, beat Jolly Fox by a length and a half for third.
