Cases Settled Out Of Court

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 10. The unexpected occurred in the Supreme Court at Dunedin today. Seven civil claims were set down for hearing before juries, but all were settled before the session was due to open at 10 a.m. The jury panel of 55 was discharged, most of them without seeing inside the courtroom, and paid £1 each for a half-day’s attendance. Lawyers can not recall a previous occasion in Dunedin when all the cases had been settled before the session opened. The seventh case was settled just before 10 o’clock. The total amount involved in the seven settlements, as given in the Supreme Court list of cases, was £22,435. Most of the claims were for damages arising from motor accidents and employment.
