Good Hockey Record

A LTHOUGH the dominant local schools in hockey have, for a long time, been Christchurch Boys’ and Christchurch West High Schools, there is anothe little behind them. This is Linwood High School which, in it compare tively brief history, has

furnished - a very praiseworthy record. Just two years after its start. Linwood won the 1957 intersecondary schools tournament in Christchurch and with it the India Shield. In succeeding years, Linwood was a losing finalist, a semi-finalist, and the winner of the tournament the school took part in during the August holidays. Recently, however, Linwood probably achieved its most satisfying win by beating the strong Christchurch Boys’ High School side. For C.B.H.S. team, it was the first loss to another school since 1960 (when penalty corners decided the match against Christchurch West) and the first loss in a competition game since 1963 when the side was in the senior reserve grade. The match evened the score this season between the two schools, Boys’ High School winning the first game, 3-2, and Linwood winning 5-3, after being down, 3-1 at half time. Those two teams are co-leaders of the grade—both having lost only to each other—and Linwood’s goal record is 116 for and 22 against; Boy’s High School has a similar record. This contest between two evently-matched teams will be carried a stage further as both are entered in the Hamilton section of the inter-secondary schools, which will also feature a number of other leading New Zealand schools. To add to the competition, Linwood again holds the India Shield, won at Napier last year, and Boys’ High school will be defending the Rankin cup, which it won at last season’s Christchurch tournament.
