RIDERS AND HOUNDS
Backdrop At Ball A dashing hunt scene, with mounted riders and hounds baying on a winter morning, was an appropriate backdrop for the Christchurch Hunt’s annual ball at the Winter Garden last evening. Tall massed arrangements of camellias and magnolias in the hunt colours of pink and white, mixed with sprays of blossom and spring flowers were a feature of the decorations. Guests at the ball, which was attended by more than 400 people, were welcomed by the Master of the Christchurch Hunt (Mr D. C. Gould) and Mrs Gould. Specially invited guests were: Mr C. A. Macdonald (Master of the Brackenfield Hunt) and Mrs Macdonald; Mr E. W, Kerr (Master of the South Canterbury Hunt) and Mrs Kerr; Mr L. McLaughlin (Master of the Starborough Hunt) and Mrs McLaughlin. Mrs Gould’s off-the-shoulder gown was designed on slimfitting lines in cherry-red French brocade, light up with a gold and silver lurex thread design. Mrs C. L. Austin, wife of the treasurer of the hunt, chose a gown in sapphire blue. The skirt was of blue chiffon, and the lace bodice featured a scoop neckline. The ball committee was: Mrs C. L. Austin, Miss H. Bedford. Mrs I. Gillanders, Mrs H. Deans, Miss S. Grigg, Mrs R. Dailey, and Mrs D. C. Gould. If there is any section of the public which ought to have skins like rhioceroses it is politicians.—Herbert Bowden, Lord President of the Council.
