PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES

“No Forecast On Overtime” (N Z. Preu Association) HAMILTON, August 10. No forecast of when New Zealand would have satisfactory mental health services could be made. Dr. G. BlakePalmer, deputy-Director-Gen-eral of Health, said in Hamilton today. He said he was not willing to discuss the situation, “but for some time it has been realised that improvements are needed.”

Emphasising that because of his position, he had to be careful when he spoke to reporters, Dr. Blake-Palmer went on to say that the department had spent the last 14 years concentrating on improving general hospitals. When local rating support of hospitals ended in 1951, general hospitals “were in a mess,” he said. Now the department was doing its utmost to provide over-all facilities of a high standard by integrating all services.

Asked what the department’s plans entailed. Dr. Blake-Palmer said only the Minister of Health (Mr MeKay) could comment on that.
