Coal
Sir, —Replying to “V.W.,” New Zealand’s coal supplies cannot last long if we continue to use coal extravagantly and also export coal. Kauri timber was treated in this way and was soon exhausted. Coal is a valuable mineral which can never be replaced. Its use as a fuel without collecting by-pro-ducts is extravagant. The byproducts can be worth more than the fuel. Even large steam-power stations waste in the condenser water most of the heat of the fuel. These losses can be reduced somewhat by using very high steam pressures. Meremere power station was already 30 years out of date as regards steam pressure when it was built. Atomic power can already be developed at a cost no greater than ordinary steam power. Recently steam power in New Zealand was costing 4.8 times as much a unit as water power. We do not want unemployment, but should not increase our number of coalminers in order to export coal.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR LUSH. August 7, 1965.
We have yet to learn tn this age that the time span of change ... is continually shortening.—Lord Baillieu.
