A Snowy Winter

In 18 years in the Methven district Mr I>. K. Barlass, who farms on the Mount Hutt road five miles from the township and directly under the mountains eight miles from Methven, says that he has not known snow to lie so long as it has done this winter. On his higher property the ewes did not see the grass for six weeks and the snow was lying up to nine to 10 inches deep on average from about four snowfalls. Peas and straw were fed out to stock during this period. At first garden peas were used and then partridge peas—the peas being fed out on the tracks made by the wheels of the tractor or trailer, and both types were taken as readily.
