Aquariums
The Captive Sea. By Craig Phillips. Frederick Muller. 272 pp. Illustrated. Index. Giant aquariums are nowadays becoming almost commonplace. One of the pioneers in this field has been Craig Phillips who, in this book, relates his experiences as curator of the Miami “S eaquarium.” The main theme is the origin and organisation of great aquariums but the technical material is leavened, if not buried, with a mass of zoological fact concerning dozens of different marine species written in a highly anecdotal style that is further reflected in the many “cartoon-type” illustrations drawn by the author himself. This is certainly a book for the fish fancier who has progressed beyond the gold-fish stage. The unattractive smallness of the type might, at first, deter the non-enthusiast, but preseverance will bring reward in the form of a marked appreciation of the writing of a marine biologist who both knows what he is talking about and has a sense of humour.
