THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY FORESTRY COMMISSION RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP OR JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN MARSUPIAL ECOLOGY. WITH the support of the Forestry Commission of New South Wales, the University proposes to make one of the above appointments for a programme of basic research into the ecology of Trichosurus spp. (and possibly other forest marsupials) causing damage to pine plantations in north-eastern N.S.W. An initial distribution survey will be fol lowed by detailed studies on wild and enclosed populations in natural habitats and in pine plantations (probably mainly in the Dorrigo district), with emphasis on food, behaviour, communication, reproduction, dis persal and mortality. It is hoped that knowledge gained may assist in devising meas ures to reduce the damage to plantations caused by these animals. A four-wheel-drive vehicle and field assistance will be provided. The successful applicant will work in and under the direction of the Zoology Department of the University of New England, and if suitably qualified may work for a higher degree He will spend about two weeks per month in the field. The duration of the appointment will be from three to five years (subject to satisfactory service, determined by periodic review). Salary for a Research Scholar will be in the range £lO6O x £BO —£l4oo p.a., and for a Junior Research Fellow tn the range £l5OO x 100—£1900 p.a. Initial salary will be determined according to qualifications and experience. Special interest and experience in field ecology or mamalogy will be an advantage but is not indispensible. A s-ound training in physical and organic chemistry or in biophysics, in addition to biochemistry, would be an advantage. The appointment will be for two years with a salary in the range £AI6OO-£A2OOO.
