Press Gang Fails A vote of thanks was extended to the immediate past president of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League (Mr P. D. Hall) at last night's annual meeting. The new president (Mr J. P. Shelley) paid tribute to the fine work Mr Hall bad done for the branch in the nine years of his presidency. “Last year against his wishes he was ‘press-ganged’ into continuing for a further year. But Unfortunately this year the Navy’s forceful methods of old failed.” Mr Shelley admitted la‘er that he, too, had been put into the office by the same methods. Cool Day After a frost of five degrees at Harewood and the Botanic Gardens, the weather in Christchurch yesterday was fine and sunny, but cool. A light north-east blew all day. Temperatures recorded at Harewood were 31 degrees at 6 a.m., 36 degrees at 9 a.m., 44 degrees at noon, 47 degrees at 3 p.m. and 46 degrees at 4.15 p.m. The temperature at the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. was 48 degrees. At 4.15 p.m. the temperature on the Government Life Building was 48 i degrees. Pig For C.0.R.5.0. “With the money we made from the stall for C.0.R.5.0., we would like you to buy 61b of dried milk and one pig for the starving people in other countries,” said a letter received at C.0.R.5.0. from 10 girls at Ham School. Mrs J. Ritchie, assistant organiser for C.0.R.5.0. in Christchurch, said that the money, £ll Is 6d. would be used exactly as requested. Lake Opened Lake Ellesmere was successfully opened to the sea soon after midnight on Friday, and yesterday a two-chain cut was running strongly with good prospects of staying open, said the Catchment Board’s Chief Engineer (Mr E. B. Dalmer). The lake rose substantially after the recent rains. Mobile X-Rays Nine hundred and fifty-two persons were X-rayed by the Health Department’s mobile X-ray unit this week. This brought the total number of X-rays during the current survey to 5953. The survey of Christchurch and suburbs which began on July 8, will finish on December 10. So far, the unit has been in Hornby. Addington, and Spreydon. The programme for next week is advertised in the public notices of “The Press” today. Telephones Out Up to 400 Fendalton telephones on the St. Albans exchange were out of order yesterday. These were progressively brought back into operation through the evening and the job should be completed this morning. The trouble occurred through water getting through a manhole outside the St. Albans sub-station and on to the cable linking Fendalton, Papanui, and St. Albans exchanges. The exchanges were brought back into operation yesterday. A Post Office gang worked overnight to restore the Fendalton telephones. Christchurch Money Christchurch people hold 13 per cent of the total savings lodged in the New Zealand Post Office—where there was £sBm at their credit, said the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake), when he opened the new Fendalton North Post Office in Christchurch yesterday afternoon. “All this £sBm has been lent to the Government, and all of it has been wisely invested by the Government,” Mr Lake said. Panic Station “Knowing the serious consequences of all board members announcing their retirement at the same time, it is recommended that the executive draft a scheme making this impossible.” This is one of the remits which will be discussed at -he forthcoming New Zealand Secondary Schools Boards’ Association conference, the secretary, Mr P, J. Quins Progressing The National Women’s Hospital last night reported that Mrs Shirley Lawson and her quintuplets were progresing very satisfactorily.—(P.A.). Live Grenade Found A hand grenade containing an explosive filling but without a detonator was discovered on a demolition site in Kilmore street yesterday morning. The man who found it, Mr J. Franklin, said the grenade was wrapped in paper and appeared to be in good condition apart from a slight rusting around the pin. The Army will explode it at the West Melton demolition range.
