Juror Fined

A woman juror who was sworn in a day late before Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday was fined £l. Violet Maude Scalmer, married, was told by his Honour that she had caused a lot of inconvenience by her failure to attend on Monday as summoned. “It is worse for a woman than a man to fail to attend as required. A man must attend, but you had only to write when you first received a notice and you would have been excused. You will have to be punished.” In explanation the juror said her small daughter had torn up the jury notice and she had guessed at the day she was required.
