EUROPEAN REFUGEES
Resettlement In N.Z. (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 3. Thousands of Europeans displaced during the Second World War are searching still for a haven. For a party of refugees who arrived in Auckland in the Italian liner Flavia the long search has ended.
The party if six adults and eight children is being resettled by the National Council of Churches.
One young refugee, a former law student, has lived in Germany for the last two years. Sponsored by the Methodist Church, he hopes to make a new career as an office worker in Tauranga. The largest family comprised Mr and Mrs A. Zychewicz and their six children. The Polish couple were taken to Germany after the Warsaw uprising in 1944 and stayed there after the war.
“We lost our parents and our brothers and sisters in the war and so there was nothing to go back for,” said Mr Zychewicz. “All our children were born in Germany.” A Polish immigration committee in Germany assisted the family and managed to get them sponsorship from the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in Palmerston North.
