RACING Prettypeen Fitter For National Test

Prettypeen was out of sorts with kidney trouble when she ran a distant fourth in the Homeby Steeplechase. but she has recovered and is thriving on her preparation for the Grand National Steeplechase on Saturday.

The type of kidney trouble that affects Prettypeen responds best to an active programme of exercise.

Work missed last week on the trip south from Tirau probably gave rise to the complaint, which unsettled her before the Homeby Steeplechase and showed itself in the signs of distress she was showing after the race.

Mr R. Campbell’s Count Rendered mare is small, but could yet be the mighty mite in the Grand National field. She looked well, and worked strongly over a round on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. She was ridden by her race rider, P. K. Cathro.

Fast Sprint Trialists on the No. 1 grass had heavy footing, but the ground was loose, and the Cashmere Plate candidate Natter (F. H. Skelton) showed she was at ease in the conditions by running half a mile in 49 2-ssec. Natter was impressive in winning her final race at two years, and she should make an early return to form in the Tutton colours. A gallop that might have ranked with the best of the morning was marred when G. W. Mein broke a stirrup leather and took a fall from the Masterton-trained Winter Cup candidate, Dhuran. Dhuran had started a halfmile sprint with his stablemate Feiramor, but they had only gone two furlongs when the leather gave way. Mein escaped injury. Status Symbol (Hadfield) led Sabell (Swanson) and Patrician (A. H. Eastwood) over six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec.

Silver Kingdom (Taggart) and Mifilou (Gye) were on terms clear of Donna Gola after running six furlongs in Intin 20 2-ssec, the last halfmile in 51 4-ssec. Silver Kingdom could be more than an outside ehance in the Jumpers’ Flat if he gallops generously. Fresh Start Duplex (Cairns) recorded Intin 21 3-ssec for six furlongs after running the opening two keenly in 26 l-ssec.

He will make a fresh start in the Paparua Handicap on Saturday, but he has done a lot of work and might make an immediate impression. Waverley (Mein), the Paparua Handicap winner last year, and an acceptor for that race again on Saturday, ran •even furlongs in Imin

37 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 54 3-ssec.

The Winter Cup top-weight, Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) recorded Imin 37 2-ssec for seven furlongs. Working well alongside Sir Limond (Hadfield), he ran the last halfmile in 54sec. For Sure (Low) ran in from the half-mile in 51 3-ssec. It was a good gallop, but the race form of this Wingatui chestnut has been disappointing.

Strawberry Fair (P. Wilson) and Krazikid (Low) sprinted half a mile in 51 2-ssec, both going to the post strongly. Krazikid might be the South Island three-year-old most likely to put Carlsberg to the test in the Cashmere Plate on Saturday. Court (Stokes), another Cashmere Plate candidate, recorded 52 3-ssec for his halfmile. He has not raced since Easter where he won at his

first of two starts for Mr D. W. J. Gould. Taylor's Mount Te Mania and White Rajah took 54sec. R. W. Taylor, who is having a good year, will ride White Rajah on Saturday. Shoshone (A. H. Eastwood), with an advantage in the weights, had a short lead over Pee Wee (Daly) after running half a mile in 51 2-ssec. It was a smart sprint in the conditions. Takatua (Low) was better than his stablemates Eversley (Collins) and Tuborg (E. J. Didham) over half a mile in 53 2-ssec. They finished in that order at intervals Of a length and a-lialf. Flying York (Didham) and Paris Match (Wildermoth) remained on terms to the end of half a mile and recorded 53 3-ssec.

Flying York is one of the stronger prospects in the Paparua Handicap. Erewhon finished a working gallop with a half-mile in 55sec. He was ridden by his Waverley part-owner, Mr E. H. Symes, so had a good weight up.
