Police Ball
More than 650 persons attended the Police Ball held at the Winter Garden. Guests were received by the president of the ball committee, Mr R. A. Henderson, and Mrs Henderson, and the vicepresident, Mr G. M. Cleary, and Mrs Cleary. They included Chief Superintendent G. W. Alty and Mrs Alty, Lieutenant Colonel M. R. W. K. Ainge and Mrs Ainge, Lieutenant G. Hales and Mrs Hales, Wing Commander G. H. S. Tosland and Mrs Tosland, the Deputy Mayor, Mr H. P. Smith, and Mrs Smith, Mr A. T. Black and Mrs Black (representing the Town Clerk), the city magistrates. Mr E. A. Lee and Mrs Lee, Mr E. J. Crutchley and Mrs Crutchley, the president of the Law Society, Mr V. G. Spiller, and Mrs Spiller, the Crown prosecutor, Mr C. M. Roper, and Mrs Roper, and Mrs A. C. B. Wade. Mrs Henderson wore a gown of gold bamboo satin with a scooped neckline and a cross-over bell fronted skirt. Mrs Cleary’s gown was of slim-lined grape-wine starlighted delustered satin brocade. The ball committee comprised Messrs Henderson, Cleary, G. Tapp, A. J. Porter, E. T. Mitten, J. E. O’Regan, H. A. Sayer, R. W. Howes, and J. P. Mather.
