Air Pollution
Sir, —Thank you for obtaining an answer to my question about air pollution. What of those made ill in the vicinity of offending sources? They have suffered for years each winter with bronchial ills before the five-year investigation began. Is there compensation for this endurance of these tormenting ills in another assurance of future attention? Will another five years elapse before things are done to eliminate those sources inimical to healthy living? Will they be given another five years to remedy matters at their own convenience? Or will these weird five-year plans just keep on and on in frustration of health?—Yours, etc., WHAT INTERVENTION? July 28, 1965. [The chairman of the air pollution advisory committee of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority (Mr N. P. Alcorn) replies: “The questions raised in this letter appear to be within the scope of the Health Act, 1956, which, in section 23, requires local authorities to promote and conserve the public health within their districts.”]
