Leading Oarsmen At Kerr's Reach
THME trials to select the New Zealand crew to tour Australia in October will be held by the Canterbury Rowing Association at Kerr’s Reach on August 14 and 15. This is the first time they have been held in Canterbury.
About 50 of the country’s top rowers have been nominated for the trials and have been in training to reach the required standard of physical fitness. The selectors, Messrs D. D. Rowlands (Auckland), R. Douglas (Mercer), and F. A, Strachan (Dunedin) will be assisted by a local doctor in discovering the fittest candidates.
Five Canterbury oarsmen are taking part in the trials. They are B. J. Fraser and L Satherley (Union), M. Brownlee (Avon), G. B. Walford (Canterbury). and
J. D. McLean (Timaru). The Canterbury association is to provide two eights for the nominees as well as all the other equipment necessary for the efficiency and smooth-running of the trials.
No word has come through from the rowing council to say whether or not Canterbury will be host to the 12 rowers selected at the trials for the New Zealand crew in training.
Certainly the facilities and coaches to train a national crew are here, and the number of boats for training is adequate. The association will be able to supply some and the schools also have new eights which could be made available.
Canterbury has some fine coaches in Messrs W. Richards, E. Lindstrom, A. H. Gould, and R. J. Shaw.
