MILK BOARD’S WORK TO IMPROVE SUPPLY
Action taken to reduce substantially tuberculosis and brucellosis in the town milk supply had been the result of representations by the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board to both the Government departments concerned and to producer organisations, said the board’s chairman (Mr H. E. Denton) in a statement to the board yesterday.
I Referring to comments pubpished since the board’s last meeting, Mr Denton said that he wanted to emphasise that I the role of local milk authj orities was to ensure that an j adequate supply of milk of 'good quality was available to j consumers in their districts. | For a number of years the ■ board had pressed for im- | provement in the Christ- | church milk supply, and its ' representations had been fol- , lowed by action. Responsibility “It is true that this action has been taken by the departI mcnts and companies con- , cemed—it was and still is their responsibility to do so," I he said. “The board has also i fully acknowledged the volun- ; tary scheme by the producer companies in this area regardI ing brucellosis eradication. It jwas prepared to offer finanIcial assistance to diagnostic
facilities but was informed that this was unnecessary at the time. Nevertheless, i reiterate that this board’s actions have resulted in a major improvement to the milk supply in these respects," said Mr Denton. “The board has, over the last year, again taken up the seasonal low solids-not-fat problem with the appropriate authorities, and has made it quite clear that it will expect the Government departments and producer organisations concerned to meet their responsibilities in this matter also. Protection “It is in this way that local milk authorities are vitally necessary to ensure adequate protection of consumer interests, not only in the matter of milk quality, but also in the proper treatment of milk, the carriage, protection and delivery of milk. All these aspects of milk supply should, have and will continue to receive the attention of this board from time to time. In this way it will perform its func-l tion and it should be fully] appreciated by every consumer in its district that no other! existing organisation can! claim to be able to give equivalent service on their behalf.”
